The Rise of Somatic Therapy: Neuroscience, Attunement, and the Healing Body

Misty Hencke, MS, LPC-S (Human Growth and Development/Counseling Theory, 1 CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

As clinical understanding of trauma and emotional dysregulation deepens, somatic therapy has emerged as a leading approach in addressing the mind-body connection with evidence-based precision. This session explores the growing integration of somatic practices in therapeutic settings, grounded in contemporary neuroscience. Participants will gain insight into how techniques such as breathwork, somatic sensing, yin yoga, and sound baths activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to downregulate overactive stress responses and promote emotional resilience. The session will discuss how these practices support trauma healing, particularly in clients with PTSD, chronic hyperarousal, or unresolved grief, by re-establishing a sense of safety and embodied presence. Neuroscientific frameworks will be presented to explain how interoception, vagal tone, and limbic regulation play key roles in healing through the body. Attention will also be given to the role and neurological explanation of attunement—therapist to client, and client to self—as a relational foundation for integrating these practices ethically and effectively. Clinicians will leave with a deeper understanding of why somatic work is not a trend, but a necessary evolution in trauma-informed care, offering sustainable tools for emotional regulation, nervous system balance, and whole-person healing.

Rooted Breath: Experiential Breathwork and Grounding in Nature

Sara Sullivan, MS, LPC (Counseling Theory - 1CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

This experiential session invites counselors to step outside—literally and figuratively—into an open-air setting by a lakeside patch of grass to explore breathwork and somatic grounding techniques that reconnect body, mind, and earth. Participants will learn and practice a variety of breathing patterns designed to regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and enhance presence. The session will also introduce somatic grounding exercises that draw attention to bodily sensation, movement, and connection with the natural world. Emphasis will be placed on the therapeutic value of working with the earth beneath us—how contact with soil, grass, and water can reawaken sensory awareness and support emotional regulation. Nature is not just a backdrop, but an active co-regulator in this session, helping clinicians restore their own balance while deepening their capacity to offer grounded presence exercises to clients. Weather permitting, the session will be held outdoors to embody the grounding principles being taught. Participants will also reflect on ways to ethically and creatively incorporate nature-based practices and/or ecotherapy into clinical work. This session offers a restorative break from a typical conference pace and a chance to reconnect—breath by breath—with one's own embodied wisdom.

Imposter Syndrome and the Professional Self: Integrating Shadow and Inner Child Work

Ryan Winters, MS, LPC, NCC (Professional Orientation - 1CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

This continuing education session invites helping professionals to explore imposter syndrome as a signal pointing toward deeper aspects of the self that need acknowledgment and integration. Attuned to the core concerns of professional identity—competence, authenticity, and worth—this hour offers space to reflect on the dissonance many counselors experience between outer expertise and inner self-doubt. Participants will examine how imposter feelings often emerge during periods of transition, increased responsibility, or visibility, threatening the professional orientated self with paralyzing self-questioning or perfectionism. Rather than ignore these moments, the second part of the session allows counselors to magnify and process through the lens of brief shadow work any doubt, fear, “blind spots,” and/or shame connected to their role. Participants are encouraged to compassionately meet the parts of themselves they have suppressed, rejected, or overcompensated for in their public roles through brief Socratic exercises followed by small group discussions. In the third part, inner child work will also be introduced as a complementary practice, helping professionals uncover formative experiences and unmet needs that may be unconsciously reenacted in their careers through brief writing exercises that invite the professional to notice any younger versions of self that feel overwhelmed by the role. By integrating these psychological frameworks, attendees will gain practical tools to better understand imposter syndrome, what their own professional blind spots are, and the hierarchy of fears around their role that deserve further contemplation and alignment moving forward. This session blends didactic material with reflective prompts to foster insight, self-compassion, and a renewed sense of inner authority in a non-judgmental learning space. Participants will leave with a deeper awareness of the unconscious narratives that shape their work and a clearer path toward aligning their professional presence with their whole, authentic selves.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping): An Experiential Introduction

Ryan Winters, MS, LPC, NCC (Counseling Theory - 1CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

This continuing education hour introduces participants to Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as tapping—a mind-body modality developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s that integrates principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with modern psychological insight. Rooted in the stimulation of acupuncture meridians through gentle tapping on pressure points, EFT operates on the belief that emotional distress and trauma are held in the body’s energy system. Attendees will be guided through the foundational tapping sequence, including how to introduce the technique and rationale to a client, SUD assessing, a demonstration of the major acupressure points, the acknowledgment of cognitive distortions, and usage of the overall system within most therapeutic frameworks. The session will also explore EFT’s applications in trauma therapy, highlighting real-life clinical examples where tapping has been used to reduce anxiety, resolve emotional blockages, and restore nervous system regulation while the client reviews traumatic material. Discussion will include common resistance points clients may encounter and how to navigate them compassionately and somatically. Attendees will also be introduced to complementary techniques such as vertical eye movement integration for minor regulation. Grounded in both theory and practice, this session offers a rare chance for clinicians to experience EFT firsthand through guided participation. By the end of the hour, participants will walk away with practical tools, a foundational understanding of EFT's clinical potential, and renewed curiosity about somatic approaches to emotional wellness.

Mindfulness-Based Meditation and Sound Therapy Introduction

Sara Sullivan, MS, LPC & Ryan Winters, MS, LPC, NCC (Counseling Theory - 2CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

This immersive session explores the powerful intersection of sound therapy and mindfulness-based meditation, offering both lecture and guided experience to deepen clinical understanding and personal practice. Participants will engage with evidence-based research highlighting how mindfulness supports top-down regulation of the brain, enhancing emotional clarity, cognitive flexibility, and stress resilience. The session will present multiple guided meditation prompts, offering clinicians a repertoire of interventions that can be adapted for diverse client needs. The neuroscience of auditory stimulation and its effect on limbic regulation, vagal tone, and parasympathetic activation will be clearly explained. Participants will leave with a felt sense of how sound and stillness can work in tandem to foster inner alignment, emotional release, and nervous system balance. This session offers a grounding, restorative experience while also equipping therapists with additional tools to support clients through both top-down and bottom-up pathways to healing.

Embodied Attachment: Integrating Somatic and Attachment-Focused Therapy Through Experiential Practice

Sara Sullivan, MS, LPC & Ryan Winters, MS, LPC, NCC (Counseling Theory - 2CEH for LPCs & for LCSWs)

This experiential session weaves together the principles of attachment-focused therapy and somatic practice to offer counselors a deeply embodied understanding of healing through relationship and presence. Participants will engage in guided exercises to explore resourcing—calling upon imaginative internal figures that embody wisdom, strength, or compassion—as a way to stabilize the nervous system and foster internal security. The session will examine the foundational role of co-regulation, both in the therapeutic relationship and in the client’s broader relational world, highlighting how attuned presence supports emotional repair and trust-building. Self-regulation will be explored through somatic and sensory practices that anchor awareness in the body, offering tools to interrupt dysregulation and promote resilience. Throughout, participants will engage in mindfulness-based movement exercises to gently expand interoceptive awareness and deepen the connection between felt sense and emotional insight. Blending theory with felt experience, this session offers clinicians practical interventions that are both grounding and relationally rich. Whether working with trauma, anxiety, or attachment wounds, these integrated tools empower therapists to support clients from a place of embodied presence and compassionate attunement.
